The Nyafisi Irrigation Scheme in Group Village Head Anne Petro, under Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje District, is emerging as a beacon of hope for local farmers, demonstrating how solar-powered irrigation technology can revolutionize rural livelihoods and drive year-round food production.

For years, smallholder farmers in this part of Malawi battled with unpredictable rainfall, low yields, and limited income. Today, thanks to a solar-powered pump irrigation system, farmers are now harvesting vegetables year-round and earning a steady income.
“I can now afford soap, food, and school fees for my children,” said Ruth Elias, one of the women benefiting from the scheme. With new confidence, she is planning to expand her income streams by starting goat farming.
Jambo Simon, a young farmer, emphasized that the project has been inclusive, offering equal opportunities to both youth and elders. “We, the youth, are fully involved and committed. We work hand in hand with our elders to sustain the scheme and build a better future,” he said.

Concurrently, Paul Mafambisa, Chairperson of the Nyafisi Irrigation Scheme, explained to Gaka FM that the project has dramatically improved the lives of its members, enabling them to meet daily needs more consistently and plan for long-term development.
“The difference is visible. Our families eat better, live better, and have hope,” Mafambisa noted.

Importantly, the benefits are not limited to scheme members. According to Collins Walasi, Agricultural Extension Development Officer for Magoti Extension Planning Area (EPA), even surrounding communities now have access to fresh vegetables and affordable produce. Farmers are no longer restricted to a single harvest season: some are now growing crops two to three times per year.
“This is exactly the kind of impact Malawi needs,” Walasi said. “It aligns perfectly with national goals under Vision 2063, particularly around achieving food security and improving rural livelihoods.”

Launched in 2023, the Nyafisi Irrigation Scheme was made possible through the support of the Foundation for Active Civic Education (FACE), with funding from UK-based organization ALL WE CAN. Their donation of a solar-powered irrigation system has not only increased productivity but also empowered local communities with sustainable tools for resilience and economic growth.
